The sixth TED Talks The Hague attracted an entirely Dutch audience. To honor International Women's Day, this session featured an all female lineup of speakers. Three women and two men spent the perfectly sunny afternoon inside, watching and discussing the following videos.
Resonance & sound
Evelyn Glennie - who lost nearly all of her hearing by age 12 - shows us where music comes from. She has to listen with her whole body, which has given her a deep connection to her music. In this performance she demonstrates that music is more than sound reaching your ears.
She also underscores that a musician should never blindly follow the score, but must add her personality to it. The following discussion focused on the unease all societies display when confronted with disabilities, and the cold, scripted encounters most of us have when contacting organizations. Should there be room to leave the script and show your personality? The answer is yes, of course. Sadly, fear, litigation and management often get in the way.
Words & meaning
Samuel Johnson defined a lexicographer as 'a harmless drudge.' Erin McKean - editor in chief of the Oxford American Dictionary - does not fit the profile. In her witty, energetic talk, McKean states that paper is the enemy of words and the print dictionary is going the way of the dodo. She actually welcomes this transformation brought on by the internet. After all, "the internet is made up of words and enthusiasm" and that's all you need to compile a dictionary. And when is a word real? When you love it.
Love & science
Love makes everything more real, obviously. Anthropologist Helen Fisher should know. She researched the feelings lovers have and noticed they have heightened sense of meaning. After examining the biochemical foundations of love, she found the brain systems that impart love, lust, infatuation and attachment. Fisher thinks that all systems need to function right to have a long lasting relationship and warns of the devastating effects of antidepressant abuse. Watch the video to find out why you should never take your girl on a riksja ride.
Because of Easter we have to bump the schedule: The next TED Talks will be on the 19th of April.
